The Chronicle of Jocelyn de Brakelond records the uncovering of Saint Edmund's incorrupt relics at Bury St Edmund's Abbey. The Abbot and certain monks uncovered the coffin, revealing the sacred body and a golden angel above the breast of the Martyr. The body was then placed in the Shrine and closed. The Abbot later ordered twelve brethren to unfasten the lid of the coffin, revealing the sacred body so filled that even a needle could hardly be put in between the head and the wood, or between the feet and the wood.
